LOCATION: San Antonio, TX
Dubuis Hall is a 96 year old, Tudor Gothic style dormitory, located at the historic center of the University of the Incarnate Word campus, in San Antonio, Texas. The dormitory is a three story, 26,000 square foot facility, housing 150 students.
The university instructed our firm to completely renovate the dormitory and in the process achieve a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification, as administered by the US Green Building Council, by applying energy reducing measures, which included replacing the mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructure of the dormitory with energy and water reducing equipment and fixtures. The
The design team was also tasked with following the Texas Historical Commission’s guidelines for renovations, in order for the university to receive a $2 million tax rebate for the $8 million project. Also, due to the design of the renovation having successfully followed the Texas Historical Commission’s guidelines, Dubuis Hall was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, due to the renovation conforming to the US Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation.
Upgrading the nearly 100 year old building to meet reduced energy consumption goals, while also retaining the buildings historic characteristics was challenging. The renovation included adding an elevator, a kitchen and a new ADA compliant exterior ramp and ADA public restrooms, along with an outdoor patio and landscaping.
The renovation was completed in March of 2022.
